Tabla

The Instrument

The tabla is a classical North Indian percussion instrument consisting of two hand-played drums. It is known for its tonal range, intricate rhythmic language, and deep connection to vocal, instrumental, and dance traditions.

More than rhythm alone, tabla is a study of listening, precision, and dialogue. Each stroke has a name, a tone, and a place within a larger structure. Practice cultivates both discipline and creativity.

My Training

I began studying tabla with Ritesh Das during my 13 years with the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, rooted in the Farrukhabad and Lucknow gharanas (lineages).

During that time, I taught beginning students and participated in performances and productions, while also learning alongside musicians and dancers from India and around the world.

Since returning to the United States, I have been studying intensively with Satyaprakash Mishra of the Benaras Gharana, who visits the U.S. regularly for performances and workshops. He is the son of the renowned tabla master Pt. Kalinath Mishra Ji.
